MEDIA RELEASE- CCRCE students at Frank H MacDonald and Oxford Regional relocating schools

Media Release:
Thursday, August 23, 2018

August 23, 2018 – Truro, NS – Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education (CCRCE) will be relocating students planning to attend Frank H MacDonald Elementary and Oxford Regional School this September. This is due to a recently discovered structural issue at F.H. MacDonald and a mortar issue at Oxford Regional School.

In both situations, CCRCE is actively working so that students and staff can begin their 2018/19 school year as scheduled; September 4th for teachers and staff, and September 6th for students. Any changes to start times will be communicated as soon as possible.

During recent renovations at Frank H. MacDonald Elementary School, a structural issue was identified that will need to be repaired while students and staff are not present. The primary to grade four students at F.H. MacDonald Elementary School will relocate next door to East Pictou Middle School so that repairs, along with further renovations at the school can be completed. The Pre-Primary class scheduled to open this September will relocate to Thorburn Consolidated.

A nearby school, Dr. W.A. MacLeod, was constructed during the same time period with a similar profile. As a precaution, a formal engineering assessment was conducted of the school and the same structural issue was identified. However, repair work is expected to be complete before the school year begins and is not anticipated to impact students or teachers and staff.

During routine maintenance checks over the summer, Oxford Regional School was found to have an issue with the masonry work that will need to be repaired while students and staff are not present. Students will be relocated to the Pugwash community. The Pre-Primary class will also be relocated to the Pugwash community.

“While we recognize this is disruptive for teachers, staff, students and parents, we must err on the side of caution and conduct necessary repairs while the building is empty. Our students and staff safety must always be our top priority,” said Chris Boulter, System Development Supervisor for Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education. “We have a contingency plan in place to ensure we can support our students, parents, and staff so they can have a smooth transition for the start of the 2018/19 school year. We deeply appreciate our school community’s patience as we move forward with these changes.”

Parents and Guardians can access up-to-date information on the CCRCE website (www.ccrce.ca) as details are confirmed. An open house session is being planned for all students and families relocating to allow for school and transportation-specific questions, as well as a tour of the new location.
