2020-2021 Grade Reconfiguration

Cobequid Family of Schools

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development released the news that all families across Nova Scotia will have access to Pre-Primary for the 2020-21 school year. This means that Truro Elementary and Harmony Heights Elementary will be receiving Pre-primary onsite for the upcoming school year.

To accommodate our growing school community, there will be a grade realignment within the Town of Truro and Bible Hill schools effective September 2020.

  • Truro Elementary will become Pre-Primary- Grade 4
  • Truro Junior High will become Grade 5-8
  • Cobequid Educational Centre will become Grade 9-12 *Grade 9 students from Truro Junior High only
  • Harmony Heights Elementary will become a Pre-Primary- Grade 4. *Similar to before, grade 5 students from Harmony Heights will go to Redcliff Middle School. Harmony Heights grade 5 students who live in Truro will go to Truro Junior High School.
  • Students in these schools will continue on their same school-to-school pathway.  The only change is students will move to their next school a year earlier.

This change will align the grade configuration to Pre-Primary to Grade 4 for all Town of Truro and Bible Hill elementary schools. It will also move Truro’s high school towards a consistent grade configuration as several other high schools within CCRCE.

It is important to us to hear from our school communities during this transition.

We acknowledge that this is a significant change for our communities. We would like to work together with our School Advisory Councils and school communities to gain community insight and input regarding plans for the realignment.

We will be creating a Community Liaison Committee (CLC) that will serve as an ongoing forum for open dialogue to discuss curriculum, operational and student support considerations during these changes. There will be one CLC for Truro Elementary/Truro Jr. High/CEC and another CLC for Harmony Heights Elementary/Redcliff Middle School.

Community Liaison Committee Members will include:

  • Your School Advisory Council Parent or Community Member Representative will sit on the Committee to represent the parent and guardian population. (Two per school, Three if including a student)
  • A representative from our Mi’kmaq community (One member)
  • A representative from our African community (One member)
  • School Principal from each school
  • CCRCE Regional Representatives (Two members)

We anticipate the CLC meetings to start in early March 2020. Prior to the first CLC meeting, we encourage you to bring your ideas and concerns forward to your School Advisory Council (or other CLC representative). At each meeting, minutes will be recorded and shared on a designated location on the CCRCE website. This will help keep our communities aware of the progress and supports that will be put in place for our students and school community.

We understand the importance of providing an opportunity for our school community members to be part of the changes.

McCulloch Education Centre & Pictou Academy Grade Realignment

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development released the news that all families across Nova Scotia will have access to Pre-Primary for the 2020-21 school year. This means that McCulloch Education Centre will be receiving Pre-primary onsite for the upcoming school year.

To accommodate this, McCulloch Education Centre and Pictou Academy will have grade realignments for the 2020-21 school year. This adjustment will allow our incoming Pre-Primary children to be with younger students in their home elementary school.

  • McCulloch Education Centre will become Pre-Primary - Grade 6
  • Pictou Academy will become Grade 7-12.

It is important to us to hear from our school communities during this transition.

We would like to work together with our School Advisory Councils and school communities to gain community insight and input regarding plans for the realignment.

We will be creating a Community Liaison Committee (CLC) that will serve as an ongoing forum for open dialogue to discuss curriculum, operational and student support considerations.

Community Liaison Members will include:

  • A representative from our Mi’kmaq community (One member)
  • A representative from our African community (One member)
  • School Principal from each school
  • CCRCE Regional Representatives (Two members)

We anticipate the CLC to be formed and begin meeting in early March 2020. Prior to the first CLC meeting, we encourage you to bring your ideas and concerns forward to your School Advisory Council (or other CLC representative). At each meeting, minutes will be recorded and shared on a designated location on the CCRCE website.

We understand the importance of providing an opportunity for our school community members to be part of the changes. We are working to keep the CLC to a manageable size to ensure all perspectives may be heard and meaningful dialogue can occur for the betterment of our students.
